As the father of an autistic child, I have been faced with more than a few necessary home modifications projects. Unfortunately, with the high cost of raising a special needs child and my wife's decision to stay home and raise our son, there simply was no room in our budget to hire a contractor to complete these projects for us. Each weekend for nearly a year, I would pick a project to work on. This past month, I finally finished every project on my list. After learning more than I thought I would ever know about home construction and repair, I have a new found appreciation for the skills of general and specialty contractors. That is why I decided to start this blog to pay tribute to the job these contractors do, and help to empower more homeowners to take on the role of a contractor in their home.
When your furnace stops working for whatever reason, booking a visit from a local furnace contractor can typically have the unit up and running before the temperature inside your home gets too uncomfortable. If it's a few days before the contractor can get the right parts to fix the furnace, however, you'll need to adopt some creative strategies to avoid feeling chilly. Enjoying a hot bath, layering up your clothing and keeping a hot water bottle or heating pad nearby are all effective strategies, but there are other useful ways to stay warm, including these three that are easy to execute.
Use Your Curtains Correctly
On days that are bright and sunny, even if the outdoor temperature is cold, rays from the sun can provide a valuable source of heat for the inside of your home. Ensure that your curtains or drapes on the sunny side of the house are wide open during the daylight hours. This position will allow the sunlight to enter your home and provide warmth. It's generally effective to draw the curtains or close the blinds once the sun sets, however, to keep the heat trapped inside your home and prevent it escaping from any cracks around your windows.
Invest In Space Heaters
A space heater becomes a valuable ally when your furnace isn't operational; buying multiple space heaters and placing them throughout your home can quickly make your living quarters considerably more comfortable. These heaters are available in several different outputs and many have additional features, such as built-in fans that help to distribute the heat and oscillating features to heat the room more evenly. It's a useful practice to ensure that there's always a space heater in the room you're occupying and another in the room that you'll be using later. For example, if you're concerned that you'll have trouble falling asleep in the cold house, place a space heater in the room beforehand.
Turn To Hot Drinks
A hot cup of coffee, tea, hot chocolate or apple cider can provide you with a feeling of warmth and comfort. Interestingly enough, while hot beverages can warm your hands and mouth, they do little to actually increase your internal temperature. However, because of the sensitivity of your mouth, holding the hot liquid momentarily before swallowing it can give you the sense that you're warmer than you are, which is certainly ideal if you're struggling to stay warm.
